Does my dog have to be registered even though it never leaves my property?

Yes, all dogs must be registered from 12 weeks of age. Dog registration forms are available from our service and information centre, located at the City of Fremantle, Town Hall Centre, 8 William Street, Fremantle. You can be fined for having an unregistered dog. Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905.

Do I need to register my dog even though it is microchipped?

Yes. Your dog must be registered and wear its registration tag, along with a tag with the owner's name and adress on it, at all times. If your dog is microchipped, make sure these details are included on your registration form, as these details will be recorded in our database.

How much does it cost to register my dog?

There are varying rates for dog registrations. Sterilised dogs are cheaper to register than unsterilised dogs, and there are further discounts for pensioners. Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905.

Can I register my dog via mail?

Yes, to obtain a dog registration form contact our service and information team on 08 9432 9899. The form must be completed and signed by an applicant over the age of 18 years. The form must be returned to the City of Fremantle, PO Box 807, Fremantle WA, 6959, along with a cheque or money order in the correct amount, together with copies of any relevant sterilisation certificates or pensioner details. Can I register my dog via phone or over the internet?

No, you must fill in a dog registration form and pay a fee. Proof of details such as sterilisation and pension entitlements also need to be provided. Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905.

How many dogs am I allowed to own?

The maximum number of dogs allowed to be kept on one property is two. Penalties exist for keeping more than the prescribed number of dogs. In some circumstances permission may be granted to keep more than two dogs. Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905.

I have recently moved to the City of Fremantle and my dog is currently registered with another council, can I transfer my dog's registration to Fremantle?

Yes, you can transfer your dog's registration from any council in Western Australian to the City of Fremantle free of charge. Contact our service and information team on 08 9432 9899.

I have found a dog, what do I do?

Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905.

What can I do about my neighbour's barking dog?

Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905 and make a complaint. Please note that you may be asked to fill in a barking dog diary to support your complaint.

I have lost my dog, what should I do?

Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905 to report your dog missing. If your dog is wearing its registration tag and its tag containing your name and address, it is more likely that your dog will be quickly and safely returned to you. You can contact neighbouring councils to report the dog missing, as well as the Shenton Park Dog's Home on 08 9381 8166, as your dog may have wandered out of the Fremantle area.

Can I receive a subsidy for sterilising my dog or cat?

Yes. Fremantle residents are eligible for a sterilisation subsidy of $25 for dogs and $15 for cats. You need to provide a copy of the sterilisation certificate from the vet and proof of residency in the City of Fremantle. Contact our service and information team on 08 9432 9899.

Can I adopt unclaimed dogs from the pound?

Yes, however you will be assessed to ensure that you are able to give the dog a suitable home. To find out if any dogs are available for adoption you can visit the City of Fremantle Dog Pound, 35 Forsyth Street, O'Connor, or you can call 08 9432 9905. The dog pound is open Monday to Friday, 3.30–4.30 pm or Saturday 9.00–10.00 am.

Another dog has attacked me or my pet, what should I do?

Contact our rangers on 08 9432 9905. You will be asked to provide a written statement of the incident, details of any witnesses, photos of any injuries or damage sustained, and relevant invoices from the veterinarian or doctor.
