Welcome to One Planet Fremantle

The aim of the One Planet Fremantle initiative is to create a future where it is easy, attractive and affordable for people to lead happy and healthy lives within a fair share of earth's resources - One Planet Fremantle.

The initiative uses 10 guiding principles as a framework to help us and our partners examine the sustainability challenges we face and to develop appropriate solutions.

As part of the One Planet Councils program in Australia, bio regional uses the 10 One Planet principles and a set of common international targets to support the development of flagship sustainable regions.

The City of Fremantle must demonstrate that it has met the common international targets for Council operations by 2020 for each of the 10 principles.

One Planet Councils develop holistic and integrated frameworks to support City of Fremantle staff, local business and industry, and residents to strive towards a one-planet lifestyle by 2025.

It is our intention to work first with City staff, and then with the broader community to develop and support an integrated One Planet Fremantle strategy, which will guide our progress towards becoming a One Planet Council.

The City of Fremantle was certified as a ‘One Planet Council’ in 2014. It also achieved International Leadership status with One Planet Council accreditation in the same year. Additional to this the City has been awarded:

  • The Western Australian Environment Award 2009 for the Government Leading by Example category
  • Banksia Awards 2003 finalist for the Government Leading by Example for a Sustainable Future category
  • The Adult Learners Award for the Outstanding Environmental Care Program (for Living Smart) in 2003
  • The Western Australian Environment Award 2002 for the Government Leading by Example category.

One Planet Strategy

The City of Fremantle’s One Planet Strategy sets out targets and trajectories for achieving a standard of sustainability that represents best practice and international leadership. The City of Fremantle is now certified as a One Planet Council, with international leadership status under Australian certification standards – and we intend to go for International Certification in 2015, which will profile us as a sustainable City on a world scale. It’s also a ripping read!

New One Planet initiatives’

Fremantle Businesses!

The City of Fremantle will be launching a great new initiative this June, just in time for the Esplanade to become a veritable winter wonderland! The Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) will be located in the West End of the Esplanade Reserve, and its purpose is to get our residents and visitors actively engaged in recycling and keeping our City litter free! To do this, the machine is a way to create incentives to make sure can and bottle waste is recycled. More info here

What we need from our wonderful local retailers is a range of great ‘rewards’ to act as incentives for RVM users. How it works is that for each can or bottle deposited, users can choose rewards from a touchscreen, and small tokens are then printed out for whichever rewards they have chosen. They then come and redeem these rewards in store, driving traffic to your business. For retailers / businesses this is an added opportunity for promotion of the business or a particular product or service offering, increasing visibility and brand recognition for just a small discount or offer, much like the ‘shop-a-docket’ opportunities on the back of supermarket receipts.

These rewards can be as simple as a discount on a cup of coffee, a two-for-one meal, a bike service, a local experience, a prize / competition entry – anything you have to offer – so anyone can participate! So feel free to be creative and make a suggestion of the reward that you’d like to offer! All reward offers will be utilised over time, so although we only need a total of 6 – 8 to start with, we will rotate rewards on a six-monthly basis if we are lucky enough to have that many generous Freo retailers jump on board!

Please contact The City’s Sustainability Officer on 9432 9999 if you’d like to register to offer a reward.

NB: Additionally – we will also be launching the pilot of the FreeWheeler app in Freo as of 1st July – so if you’re happy for your rewards to also be offered for this great project – please let us know! More info here.

Thanks so much for your generosity and willingness to keep Freo clean, lean and green!
