Queen Victoria Street roadworks

Project starts:
08/08/2011

The works for the Queen Victoria Street road realignment (from James Street to Parry Street) commenced in the first week of August 2011.

The project in its entirety will take about four months to complete and is broken into 4 stages.

This is a $1.3 million project that was initiated by the City to remodel and enhance one of Fremantle's main entrances to the CBD area.

The design was undertaken by city officers with input from external contractors to ensure that the final design is both sustainable to accommodate the traffic demand along this part of the road and also look attractive with urban landscaping works.

Stage 1

Stage 1 of the works will take approximately four weeks, commencing the first week of August 2011.  Works will be undertaken 6 days per week (Monday to Saturday) commencing at approximately 7.00 am and finishing by 5.00 pm.

Stage 1 will span from James Street to the southern end of the Fort Knox building.  One side of the road will be blocked leaving 2 lanes open for one-way traffic into the city only and will be managed by the City's traffic management contractor.

Works will include:

  • installation of pedestrian barriers
  • footpath works
  • kerbing works and
  • excavation and road resurfacing and realignment.

It is imperative that the works will have as little impact on residents and businesses and access will be managed by the traffic management officers who are happy to comply with these arrangements.

Stage 2

With the successful completion of stage 1, stage 2 commenced on Monday 29 August 2011 and is now well underway.

Removal of the fig trees on the western side of Queen Victoria Street (near the Parry Street end) was undertaken due to the trees being extremely damaging to the local infrastructure and residences and will be replaced with the more suitable species of Plane Trees which we expect will flourish in the new environment.

All of the same types of works will be done including;

  • installation of pedestrian barriers
  • footpath works
  • kerbing works
  • excavation and road resurfacing and realignment.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local residences, business owners and visitors to the area for their patience with access issues during the Stage 2 works.

Stage 3

Stage 3 will commence on Tuesday 27 September 2011.

Stages 1 and 2 are now completed which means that works will now move to the eastern side of the road, commencing at the James Street end of Queen Victoria Street.

There will be changes to the traffic movements through the traffic lights at the James Street/Queen Victoria Street intersection and this will be carefully managed by the City's traffic management contractor.  We ask that vehicles maneuvering this intersection take extra care during this time.

The commencement of stage 3 marks the half way point of this project and we thank all local residents, businesses and visitors to the area for your patience and cooperation during these works.
