Recycling service for domestic properties
The City of Fremantle is a member of the South Metropolitan Regional Council, which has implemented a regional waste management strategy – the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC). The centre has dramatically reduced household material sent to landfill by over 70%, by combining leading technology with a simple, community friendly collection system.
The RRRC treats two major resource streams – yellow top bins and green top bins. Non-recyclable and non-compostable items are automatically separated from both bins for landfill.
The distinctive yellow top recycling bin is provided for the collection of dry mixed recyclables from your waste. Use the bin properly to significantly reduce the amount of materials going to landfill sites. The 3 R's - reduce, reuse and recycle - are a simple way to rethink the things that you no longer need and make a difference today!
There is an additional cost for new bins. Contact our waste management team on 08 9432 9999 for more information.
Yellow topped bin
Your yellow topped bin is emptied once a fortnight on the same day as your green bin – except where an alternative day has been agreed for some residential properties within the CBD.
Yellow top bins are mechanically sorted to separate recyclable streams such as paper, cardboard, metal, glass and various grades of plastics. These products are then sold to other companies for use in making new products. Items shoul be loose (not in plastic bags) and if possible, rinsed.
The following items can be recycled:
- glass bottles, rinsed jars and containers with lids off
- light globes and broken glass
- plastic bottles, including icecream containers, juice and milk containers
- aluminum, cans and foils
- steel cans
- aerosol cans
- cling wrap
- polystyrene
- all glass - including light globes and broken glass
- liquid paperboard, including fruit juice and dairy cartons
- foam meat trays
- paper, cardboard products, including wax cartons, junk mail, pizza boxes and magazines
- plastic cutlery
- empty plastic shopping bags.
Do not put these items in your yellow topped bin:
- no green waste
- no clothing/shoes
- no electrical appliances.
The annual waste recycling calendar issued to residents contains are a more detailed list of recyclable and waste products.

Green top bins
The contents of your green top bin are manually sorted at the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC) to remove any large, inorganic objects, such as basketballs or suitcases. The rest of the green top bins are industrially composted.
All food, organic and general household waste, grass clippings and small prunings go into your waste composting bin (green topped).
Do not put these items in your green topped bin:
- no glass
- no batteries
- no medical waste or needles
- no hazardous waste (no paint, oil, garden chemicals, pool chemicals, bleaches, flammable liquids or acids)
- no construction, demolition and building materials (no bricks, sand, soil, concrete, rocks or asbestos).
Before placing anything in either bin, ask yourself "can this be reused?" Better to reuse before recycle.
