Can changes be made to a heritage listed place?
Inclusion of a place in the Municipal Heritage List or heritage list does not prohibit its further development. However, changes made to a place should respect and be sympathetic to the heritage values of the place. All types of development and/or maintenance of places listed on the City's MHI and heritage list requires council approval. Those places listed on the Heritage Council of Western Australia's Register (HCWA) of Heritage Places also require approval from the Heritage Council.
Where can you get assistance about the development of a heritage listed place?
If you require additional information about heritage listings, contact the Service and Information centre on 9432 9999 or email planning@fremantle.wa.gov.au. The City offers free conservation and technical advice from heritage professionals for owners of heritage listed places (conditions apply).
Owners of heritage listed places may apply for subsidised loans through the Heritage Loans Subsidy Scheme. This scheme subsidises interest rates on loans for conservation works by 4%, offering owners significant savings. The Heritage Loans Subsidy Scheme is administered by the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) and the Heritage Council of Western Australia. For more information about this scheme visit the Heritage Council of Western Australia website.
