The International Relations Programme, formerly known as Sister Cities, runs a diverse programme of exchanges and events with eight sister and friendship cities.

International Relations and the City of Fremantle

Fremantle currently has sister city relations with Seberang Perai in Malaysia (1978), Yokosuka in Japan (1979), Funchal in Portugal (1996), Capo d'Orlando (1983) and Molfetta (1984) in Italy. It also has three friendship agreements with Suribaya (1996) and Padang (1996) in Indonesia and Korcula, Croatia (1999).

Ceremonial Dance

The International Relations Programme, formerly known as Sister Cities, runs a diverse programme of exchanges and events with the above sister and friendship cities. The City of Fremantle has over twenty years of experience in international exchange and has one of the most active programmes in Australia.

Exchanges have included:

  • Mayoral delegations.
  • Student and teacher exchanges
  • Performance group exchanges (for the Fremantle Festival)
  • Visiting bishops from Capo d'Orlando and Molfetta (for Blessing of the Fleet Festival
  • Council officer exchanges
