A first for Fremantle;
Espresso Festival 2009
They are a hit the world over from India to China, New York to New Zealand in towns and cities that consider themselves connoisseurs of fine coffee, so it’s fitting that the only West Australian city boasting its very own ‘cappuccino strip’ has a coffee festival too.
Fremantle will host its inaugural Espresso Festival on July 17 and 18 but right now organisers at the City of Fremantle want all the cafes, croissant and coffee shops, patisseries and bakeries to send a delegate to a special briefing at 3pm on March 10 at the City of Fremantle reception room to find out what the festival will be all about.
City marketing project officer, Leah Robinson, says events like waiter races and barista competitions will put a flame under age-old cappuccino strip rivalries, some dating back a to when Old Pappas and Ginos battled it out on South Terrace for best coffee in town.
“Foremost it’s going to be a fun festival that will enhance Fremantle’s reputation as the festival heart of Western Australia,” Leah said.
“We have the annual Fremantle Festival, the Street Arts Festival and the Blues and Roots Festival and a coffee festival fits perfectly into that culture.
“And it’s what many people love most about Fremantle – sitting and sipping a long black or an espresso and watching the world go by.”
Associated events will include a high tea, cooking demonstrations and artworks all inspired by the humble and comfortable cup of coffee.
For more information about the briefing contact the City’s marketing team on 9430 9450.
