Event celebrates refugee contribution to new home
CONTRIBUTIONS made by refugees to their new homelands will be celebrated at the Fremantle Town Hall on Saturday, June 20 from 10am.
The day of family-friendly activities will conclude Refugee Week – an event staged by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship – which begins this Sunday.
This national event has been celebrated in Australia since 1986, and this year the theme is Freedom from Fear as it’s the sentiment at the heart of a refugee’s flight from danger.
The multicultural event at the Fremantle Town Hall will include Chung Wah Chinese dancing, African drumming, an Italian choir and the Mercy Choir, Bamboo dancing, the WASA Band as well as information stalls, performances and displays from different cultures.
The event will also give people the opportunity to participate in activities such as art workshops where they can explore what freedom from fear actually means to them.
A performance of the play Stories from the Suitcase at 12.30pm is expected to be a highlight of the day. Written and produced by Yvette Wall from Frog Prince Productions, this short production reflects the experiences of people who, as refugees, have made Australia their home.
Other activities on the day will include woodworking activities for children, a sausage sizzle plus many items available for sale.
