Fremantle Fire Fundraiser –
for Victoria bush fire victims
City of Fremantle staff and its friends have pulled together to host a major fundraiser at the Esplanade Park on March 1, between 10am and 1pm, for the hundreds of victims of the Victorian bushfires.
Mayor Peter Tagliaferri says he’s been inundated with messages from the public asking how the City is helping the townspeople of rural Victoria, many of whom lost possessions, homes, loved ones and in the case of Marysville, their entire community, in the ferocious blazes that ravaged parts of the state.
“Many want to know how they can donate and then we have business like Dorsogna calling and offering help,” the Mayor said.
“They said we could have as much bacon and sausages as we need and in-turn have secured Harvey Fresh, Mias Bakery and Golden Farm Eggs and suddenly we have what is shaping up as a huge fundraiser generated solely by the goodwill of the community.
“This is the sort of thing Fremantle is all about.
“As West Australian’s I think we feel helpless sometimes at not being able to provide physical support and so far we have referred all who have rung and asked us about how to help, to services like the Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and Westpac and encouraged them to donate cash, blood and plasma.
“But this is Fremantle and we are a large, caring community and we just had to do something other than just point people in the right direction for donations.”
Some details are still to be confirmed but early indications are that the Perth Wildcats and Fremantle Dockers players may be among those attending.
Apart from the business mentioned previously The Rotary Club of Fremantle City, local police SES and the bush fire brigade will be on hand to make the event a success. Gelati will donate fruit and 96FM is supporting with help promoting the event.
To donate cash now, go to the City website at www.fremantle.wa.gov.au and click on the link.
The Mayor said the City’s thoughts too are with the victims of the Queensland floods. _____________________________
