Fremantle Switches Off for Earth Hour

Switch off power to switch

on Earth Hour

The heart of Fremantle around the council offices in Kings Square and Queensgate car park will be plunged into darkness on Saturday, March 28 between 8.30 and 9.30pm as the City supports Earth Hour, a global initiative aimed a raising awareness of global warming.

The City’s sustainability officer Alex Hyndman says Earth Hour is a symbolic event raising awareness of Climate Change by encouraging people, businesses and governments to turn off their lights for an hour.  Leading the way, Fremantle City Council  will switch off at the council office building and the Queensgate carpark.

In 2007, 2.2 million people participated in Earth Hour.  The movement grew to 50 million people in 2008, across 370 cities globally.  In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach a billion people.

This year, the City is also working with a special Earth Hour Committee to help more local communities develop their own events.  Events are planned for South Fremantle (Parmelia Park), Booyeembara Park in White Gum Valley, Fremantle Primary School (Alma Street), Alfred Road Park in North Fremantle and Griffith Park in Hilton. Each will be organised by the local community to allow for local flair to flourish.

Alex says the dream behind Earth Hour is about much more than turning off the lights for an hour each year.

“It’s the first step and taking the next step is as easy as installing energy efficient lightbulbs like compact fluorescent lightbulbs lasts about 10 times as long and use a fraction of the energy of a standard incandescent bulb.

“Or sign up for green electricity. “This is the single most powerful step that most people can take to reduce their greenhouse emissions. “By signing up for Synergy’s NaturalPowerTM , you’ll be purchasing renewable energy for your home – all for less than a cup of coffee a day.

“Turn appliances off at the wall.  Electronic appliances, especially those with remotes, often use power when they’re switched off.  By turning appliances off at the wall, when not needed, they can’t use power and you can save up to 10% of your electricity bill.”
