Mayor slams Hilton Police Station closure

09 Oct 2009

FREMANTLE Mayor, Peter Tagliaferri has slammed the decision to close the Hilton Police Station on October 16, calling it a blow to the safety of the Hilton community.

The Police station has been an important part of Hilton for over 50 years and Mayor Tagliaferri has rejected claims made by South Metropolitan District Superintendent, Scott Higgins that a “police station around the corner” would not make the community any safer.

“The station is a permanent deterrent and reminder that the Hilton area is a police stronghold. A patrol car passing through the streets every now and again without a nearby station just doesn’t send the same message” He said.

The Mayor also fears the closure of the local station in favour of larger policing hubs will hurt the disadvantaged, especially the elderly, children, and those with limited transport options.

A local bond has been built between residents and the police solely due to the close proximity; forcing residents to travel outside their local takes away the bond, and inconveniences those who do not have access to a car.

“Bigger doesn’t mean better. The community will lose the peace of mind of an accessible cop shop. It makes it terribly difficult for the elderly and people with limited transport options to travel all the way to Fremantle, Murdoch, or Palmyra”. Mayor Tagliaferri said.
