Walkers put their best foot forward for community event
Beginners and the experienced, young and old, families and singles; walkers of all ages are putting their best foot forward for the free Heart Foundation Walking event at Phoenix Shopping Centre on Thursday, May 7, 2009.
The event, co-coordinated by the Cities of Fremantle and Cockburn, will start with an information session followed by refreshments to fuel the body for the social walk from the Rockingham road located shopping centre to Spearwood’s MacFaull Park.
The Heart Foundation recommends you include at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week. City of Fremantle Physical Activity Project Officer Stephanie Lamb said that walking was not only a great way to maintain great health and wellbeing, but gave people a chance to catch up with friends and meet new walkers along the way.
“Walking is low impact and needn’t cut into your social life,” she said.
“Get those legs pumping by inviting friends for a walk around the park or to the shops rather than sitting in a stuffy room eating and drinking.”
The event next Thursday gives the opportunity for people to grab some friends, put on their favourite walking shoes, then meet and share a laugh with other walkers from around their area.
Attendees may then choose to join a Heart Foundations network of community-based walking groups. Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’s largest network of free community based walking groups, led by volunteer walk organisers.
The community information session will give tips on the benefits of walking as a group and walkers attending the event may also pick up a free walking trail booklet.
Refreshments are provided after the community information session, with the walk kicking off straight after.
Groups of walkers will then take the 2km walk from Phoenix Shopping Centre to MacFaull Park taking as little or as much time as they want.
The event starts 11:30am at the Phoenix Shopping Centre: 254 Rockingham Road, Spearwood.
Heart Foundation has walking groups Nationwide and members receive a regular walking newsletter which includes updates on the program, healthy recipes and tips for staying active.
Volunteer organisers lead the walking groups and currently the Heart Foundation is looking for more people to start new groups.
