Household organic waste (green-top bins)

The City collects normal household refuse from your green 240 litre rubbish bin on a weekly basis.

The contents of your green top bin are manually sorted at the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC) to remove any large, inorganic objects, such as basketballs or suitcases. The rest of the green top bins are industrially composted.

What will be collected

All food, organic and general household waste, grass clippings and small prunings go into your waste composting bin (green topped).

Please do not put the following items in your green topped bin:

  • medical waste or needles
  • hazardous waste (ie - paint, oil, garden chemicals, pool chemicals, bleaches, flammable liquids, asbestos or acids)
  • construction, demolition and building materials (ie - bricks, sand, soil, concrete or rocks.

Placement of bins for collection

The following information is important to ensure that your bin is collected:

  • Bins need to be placed on the verge by 6.00 am on your collection day.  Please ensure that bins are placed as close to the kerbline as possible.
  • Any waste that is not contained in the bin will not be collected.
  • Place place bins a minimum of half a metre away from each other.
  • Ensure the bin lid is closed to prevent causing street litter.
  • Place your bin clear of parked cars, trees, street light and signage poles to prevent damage

Handy hints

  • Return bins to your property as soon as possible.
  • Store bins in a shaded area.
  • Clean bins regularly.
  • Wrap all moist and perishable foods in newspaper before placing in your green bin.
  • Freeze all smelly food and place in your green bin the night before collection.
  • Put lawn clippings and small prunings on top of the material in your green bin to prevent jamming.
  • If you have a disability or are unable to put out your bin, the City is able to assist. Contact our waste management team on 08 9432 9999 to make arrangements.
