South Fremantle landfill site
The City of Fremantle has been undertaking groundwater and offsite monitoring of the South Fremantle landfill site on a biannual basis since 1998. The site assessments and investigations for the area around and inside site have been undertaken to:
- determine the level of environmental impact associated with the landfill site
- determine issues involving residential use of the groundwater that may be potentially contaminated by the landfill.
The City's understands its responsibilities and duty of care to nearby residents and the work has been undertaken with the advice and support of the Department of Environment.
The City has completed a feasibility study into alternative land uses for the site on basis that retaining the site, as is, is considered inappropriate. As a result, further work is being progressed on the Hollis Park section of the site to determine the feasibility of future residential development on this section.
In the interim, the City will develop and implement a long term management plan for the site.
Copies of reports relating to the South Fremantle landfill site are available at the local history collection of the Fremantle library. Contact the local history collection on 08 9432 9739.
