(30/11/2017) More parking at Leighton Beach

Finding a parking spot at the beach will be made a little easier after the Fremantle Council voted to expand the carpark at Leighton.

The City of Fremantle will spend $70,000 to add another 19 bays to carpark 48, which is off the roundabout at the northern end of Leighton Beach Boulevard.

Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt said the extra parking will make it easier for people to enjoy one of WA’s best beaches.

“We’ve seen a lot of development at Leighton in the past few years, with the new apartments, new restaurants and cafes and the City’s upgrades to the change rooms and kiosk,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“These new facilities have made Leighton a popular place to visit, but the feedback we’ve been getting from the community is that there’s not enough parking during peak periods.

“These additional bays will help to take some of the pressure off and allow more people to take advantage of our beautiful beach.”

The City of Fremantle currently provides over 100 free parking bays with no time limits in carpark 47, near the surf club, along with around 90 bays along Leighton Beach Boulevard and 70 bays in carpark 48.

The City’s engineers expect to have the design for the expanded carpark finalised before Christmas, with construction due to start in April next year.

The City is also investigating options to install CCTV cameras in the area to improve security.
