(3/1/2018) Cappuccino Strip shines brighter

Fremantle’s famous Cappuccino Strip is shining brighter following the installation of new LED street lights.

The City of Fremantle has removed 36 old-fashioned light fittings, using 150 watt metal halide globes, and replaced them with new 40 watt LED fittings.

Infrastructure and Engineering manager David Janssens said the new lights will not only shine brighter but also use significantly less power and result in substantial savings on maintenance.

“The new LED lights will see energy consumption from the street lights on the strip drop from almost 24,000kwh per year to around 6000kwh, so that’s a reduction of around 75 per cent,” Mr Janssens said.

“They also have a lifespan many times longer than metal halide globes. Now that they’re in we expect it will be a few years before they’ll need maintenance, and that represents a huge saving for the City in labour, parts and equipment.”

Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt said the new street lights were a win-win-win investment for Freo.

“They will make the Cappuccino Strip brighter and more appealing at night, save ratepayers money and reduce carbon emissions,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“These are the kinds of investments that are at the heart of our Low Carbon Energy Plan.”

Mayor Pettitt said support for renewable energy and energy efficiency measures form part of the City’s One Planet goals to become zero carbon by 2025.

“As well as replacing old street lights with LEDs, we’re also using LED lighting in new projects,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“For example, the new Stan Reilly carpark on South Terrace will include 12 double outreach LED lights powered by solar panels, and the design for the Kings Square renewal also includes LED lighting.”
