Objectives and benefits

The City of Fremantle has the exciting opportunity to upgrade the Fremantle Public Golf Course and clubhouse facility.

The project has been initiated by the Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) High Street and Stirling Highway upgrade project. The new High Street road alignment and median have been designed to retain and protect as many of the existing significant trees as possible within the High Street road corridor.

To accommodate the roundabout and median, MRWA are acquiring a portion of the A Class and C Class reserves on the southern side of High Street and rezone it as Road Reserve, land that is currently leased by the Fremantle Public Golf Course.

Background information

The City has appointed Perth-based landscape architects Aspect Studios to undertake the project, including specialist golf course designer Richard Chamberlain, landscape architect Stuart Pullyblank and project manager Mal Birch. Mr Chamberlain has more than 30 years of international experience in golf course design including at Royal Hobart and Royal Fremantle golf clubs.

He is also responsible for the extremely successful mini-golf course at the Wembley Golf Course. Mr Pullyblank and Mr Birch have recently completed the redevelopment of the Lake 9 at Collier Park in the City of South Perth. Aspect Studios Director Tom Griffiths said the design of the new Fremantle layout would be led by the landscape.

The Golf Course project is required to achieve the following objectives:

  • Retain 9 holes
  • Retain par 34
  • Retain driving range and practice green
  • Like for like new golf clubhouse facility
  • Minimum impact on trees
  • Minimum impact on Booyeembara Park
  • Golf course safety compliance
