Fremantle Leisure Centre’s Squad program caters for all levels of competitive and non-competitive swimmers. Whether your child wants to swim for fitness and make new friends, or has chosen to pursue swimming as their chosen sport and wants to compete, then our Squads program is the perfect choice.
Led by Head Coach Carlos Chitao, the coaching team will work with each swimmer to best achieve their personal goals in the pool and to develop their character as they swim as part of a team in their squad.
Where to start?
To get started in our Squad program all swimmers must complete an assessment by a coach. This is how we can best determine the squad your child will fit into.
Assessments occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3:45pm. Swimmers in our Learn to Swim Over 5's program and swimmers from other swim schools who can meet certain entry criteria can book into our Free Squad Assessments - our team will approach you if we feel your child is ready for a squad assessment. The current entry criteria into our transition squads is:
- 25m Freestyle
- 25m Breaststroke
- 25m Backstroke
Login or register for your swim program account and choose an available assessment spot online. Make sure you filter by "Free Squad Assessments" and book into an option that suits you.
> Squad assessments for new swimmers are currently suspended due to the program reaching its student capacity. We hope to open assessments again very soon!

Flippers & Torpedos Squads
Swimmers new to squad swimming will start in Flippers (10 years and under) or Torpedos (11 years and over). Here swimmers will be introduced to competitive techniques across all four strokes, individual medley (IM), starts and turns. Focus us placed on building the engine for further swimmer development. When the Flippers and Torpedos exit criteria is met, swimmers will be moved to the appropriate competitive or fitness squad. Swimmers in our competitive stream will develop fitness and competition skills while following specifically designed squad training programs. Techniques to improve individual performances are introduced with focus on creating a strong team culture.
The techniques introduced in each squad are a vital component of training and are maintained and developed as swimmers progress through the program. Swimmers in the competitive stream are encouraged to join Fremantle Port Swimming Club and participate in club days, dual club meets and Swimming WA qualifying meets.

The fitness program suits swimmers who haven’t chosen swimming as their main sport, but still want to keep fit and improve their skills in the water, while being part of a squad. Emphasis is placed on supporting all swimmers, regardless of their aquatic pursuits.
Programs are focused on maintaining fitness levels through the use of drills and an emphasis is placed on building aerobic capacity. It is expected that swimmers have a sound foundation of swimming ability prior to entering the fitness pathway.
Swimmers are promoted to the next squad when they meet selected entry criteria. Fitness swimmers can be assessed by coaches at any point to move over into the competitive stream.
