BASED ON A BOOM-AND-BUST ECONOMY
Fremantle Library, Mardoo Room
Fremantle has had significant bursts of boom development which are closely linked to significant government policy changes and WA mining booms, as well as a memorable sporting event!
Explore how these factors have significantly shaped our city.
1950s/60s European Migrants and Mineral Boom ~ Post World War II saw the influx of a large number of European Migrants to Fremantle who bought with them many aspects of their home cultures including building development, alterations and additions much of which we can still see today. This era lead into the 1960s Mineral Boom, which love them or hate them gave us a raft of Modernist buildings. This is the era that is now being recognised as heritage (sometimes controversially) with many questions around what the community values, what should be listed and protected as heritage and what should make way for new development.
