Hidden Treasures is Walyalup | Fremantle’s long-running music series known for unearthing new talent in unexpected venues around town.

This June, Hidden Treasures will be held across three nights in entirely new locations, with a variety of venues in North Fremantle and Hilton, as well as original festival venue the Buffalo Club.

Abbe May, one of Australia’s most respected songwriters and enigmatic performers, was selected as one of four co-curators and put forward musicians of varied genres.

“My picks for this season are strong, intelligent, wonderful artists who I know will capture the devotion of anyone who encounters them.

“Hidden Treasures is an annual blessing and unveiling of newfound talent. It’s a marvellous series of awe inspired moments in witnessing live music.

“Hidden Treasures is an opportunity to find artists you didn’t previously know about, whom you will likely love for ever more,” she said.

The other curators are Nelson Mondlane (POW! Negro) best known as the MC of SUPEREGO, Myriad Sun and People Taking Pictures; Phaedra Watts, Festival Director of The Nannup Music Festival; and local garage punk band Last Quokka.

Creative Programs Lead ‘Ofa Fotu said that this iteration of the festival was made in consultation with artists from the local music industry, but the essence remains the same.

“We are committed to supporting local emerging acts and by giving the festival a facelift this year we have been able to continue to do so, as well as giving venues in the suburbs a chance to shine.

“We invite audiences to buckle in and get ready to experience a whole trove of music and places they might not usually be exposed to,” she said.

As well as the Buffalo Club, venues in the ‘North Freo Nook’ include the North Freo Bowlo, Community Centre and North Fremantle Social Farm. The ‘Hilton Trove’ spaces include the Hilton Park Bowling Club and Bocce Field, and the Men’s Shed (Jam Space).
