The Hilton Park Precinct Masterplan has won a Landscape Planning award at the 2025 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ WA Awards.

The Hilton Park Precinct Masterplan has won a Landscape Planning award at the 2025 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ WA Awards.

Presented to the City of Fremantle and its consultants REALMstudios and Shape Urban, the award reflects the hard work, creativity, and collaboration that went into producing the Hilton Park Place Plan and Masterplan.

The City’s Place and Projects team, with Emily Parsons as the project lead, undertook significant engagement with local residents, sporting clubs, and other stakeholders.

The creation of a shared vision began in August 2023 with a series of on-site drop-in sessions, where people gave their thoughts and ideas on everything from sporting facility renewal and footpaths to tree plantings.

This process resulted in a community-supported Place Plan and Masterplan, both endorsed by Fremantle Council.

The Masterplan identifies delivery priorities across the next decade, subject to future funding.

Now in the design phase, the project has already received a $3.75 million federal government grant to go towards stage one, which includes the refurbishment of the Brad Hardie Pavilion.

Covering 19 hectares in Beaconsfield, the Hilton Park Precinct is Fremantle’s largest recreation and sporting open space.

The Hilton Park project has set a strong precedent for collaborative, community-led planning in a multipurpose urban space. It’s a balance of aspirations for formal sports needs, general social use and ecological benefits.

As a state winner, the Hilton Park project will now be considered for an AILA national award, to be announced in October this year.

The AILA annual awards are an opportunity for public and peer recognition of landscape architect’s work, and demonstrates to industry, business, government and the wider community the positive impact the profession has on Australian lives through the planning and design of the built and natural environments.
