A new era of parking in Fremantle

A parking lot filled with cars is bordered by tall trees. Two vertical banners on a pole display “PARK FREO.” Signs and vehicles are visible throughout the lot under a clear, sunny sky.

The City of Fremantle is rolling out new parking meters across the city.

The City of Fremantle is rolling out new parking meters across the city.

The new meters use Pay-by-Plate technology and are replacing the existing pay-and-display paper ticket machines, which have reached the end of their operational life.

Pay-by-Plate technology uses the vehicle’s licence plate number to record the parking duration and payment amount, removing the need to display a paper ticket on the vehicle’s dashboard.

The meters accept tap and go payments through a smart device or credit / debit card.

More than half of the 117 new meters accept cash. Cash-accepting meters are easily identifiable with a bright blue strip across the top of the unit and have been located based on previous usage data that identifies where cash payments are still being used.

Director of City Business Matt Hammond said customers now have the option to use the new pay-by-plate meters or EasyPark, the pay-by-phone app, which has been in operation here for a year now.

“The new parking meters offer a more convenient, more informative parking experience.

“The first thing people will notice is the sleek new design, with a large touch screen making the display information easier to see.

“Paperless meters are better for the environment, and they save time as there’s no need to walk back to your car to put a ticket on the dash,” Mr Hammond said.

Meanwhile, all the City-operated off-street car parks have recently been rebranded to ‘ParkFreo’ to make them easily identifiable to customers.

The City manages 25 car parks, mostly within the city centre, with private providers operating other car parks around Fremantle.

“Customers can be reassured that every dollar spent in a Park Freo car park goes back to supporting the Fremantle community,” Mr Hammond said.
