Fremantle residents advised of upcoming nationwide AusAlert test

The nationwide test of the Australian Government’s new emergency warning system, AusAlert, will take place at midday on Monday 27 July.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will send a test alert to compatible mobile phones and other supported devices across Australia as part of the final preparations before the system becomes operational later this year.

Devices will vibrate and play a siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds. An AusAlert message will appear on the screen, clearly stating that it’s a test and that no action is required.

AusAlert uses cell broadcast technology to send emergency warnings to all compatible mobile devices within a specific geographic area. The technology allows emergency services to quickly deliver critical information during emergencies such as bushfires, floods, cyclones and other significant incidents.

People who keep a secondary or hidden mobile phone for personal safety, should be aware that compatible devices will receive the test alert if they are switched on and connected to a mobile network. If you or someone you know may be affected, consider planning ahead and taking any steps needed to maintain safety.

The test alert will be sent to all mobile devices, including phones set to silent and ‘do not disturb’ modes. The only way to not receive the test alert is to turn off the device or put it in aeroplane mode.

The nationwide test follows successful community trials conducted in several locations across Australia and is designed to ensure the system is ready for use when it launches in October 2026.

Everyone is encouraged to familiarise themselves with Australia’s emergency warning systems and to always follow the advice of emergency services during an emergency.
