The City of Fremantle has an eclectic range of multi-unit developments (MUDs), whether it’s single or multi-storey, mixed with commercial, or converted buildings. The diversity of residential developments may require changes to the standard waste service due to space or servicing.

Below are some tips that can help MUDs manage their waste.

Bin Collection

Each MUD is a different shape and size, so City officers will figure out the best solution to service the property.

*Weekly collection of 660L or 1100L landfill skip bins are for large complexes and will depend on the capacity required.

If your current bin service is not working for your MUD, then please contact Waste Services to discuss a solution.

FOGO

The FOGO three-bin system collects food and garden waste from the landfill bin, allowing it to be recycled into compost instead of rotting in landfill, where it produces harmful methane gases. The City of Fremantle is now rolling out the FOGO bin service to residents living in a multi-unit development (MUD).

Due to the complexity of MUD's, a quick on-site assessment may be required before changing the bin service. We recognise that in a few cases, not every MUD is suitable for FOGO.

If you would like your complex to go FOGO contact Waste Services on 1300 MY FREO (1300 693 736).

Two free caddy liners are available from City facilities per financial year, upon presentation of photo identification.

Resources

Each apartment or unit using the FOGO bins will receive a caddy pack containing:

  • Caddy to place in your kitchen
  • Compostable caddy liners
  • Flyers on using the service and alternatives to caddy liners
  • Bin stickers or magnets.

If more assistance is required, a free 20-minute education session is available for residents who would like some one-on-one information. Bin stickers or signs for bin rooms may also be of assistance (subject to availability). Please contact Waste Services on 1300 MY FREO (1300 693 736).

Verge Collection

Bulk General Waste Verge Collection

All properties, including those located in the CBD, are eligible for the pre-booked general waste verge collection, by Verge Valet.

Larger complexes over 25 units will require their property or maintenance manager to set up the Verge Valet service on behalf of the property.

To book or for more information, visit Verge Valet.

Bulk Garden Organics Verge Collection

If you have a front verge, please visit Bulk Garden Organics Service.

Please note that not all MUDs are eligible for the green waste verge collection, including those in the CBD.

Containers for Change

Containers for Change offers a 10-cent refund for eligible containers.

Your MUD can request a collection receptacle, with a free collection. Funds can be donated, or used to fundraise for a communal project like a trailer, barbeque, pizza party, etc.

The containers are processed at the City of Fremantle refund point at 83 Knutsford Street, Fremantle, which further helps the Fremantle community.

Visit City of Fremantle Containers for Change.

Fremantle Recycling Centre

The Fremantle Recycling Centre, located at 19a Montreal Street Fremantle, accepts over 35 different items for recycling or reuse, and has a Reuse Shop. Most are free, however items like tyres or mattresses incur a fee.

For larger, bulkier items, each residential property is entitled to six passes to the Fremantle Recycling Centre per financial year. These passes are digital. Simply present your photo identification at the gate.

For opening hours and accepted items, visit Fremantle Recycling Centre.
