The City of Fremantle’s annual tree planting program is now underway, with a total of 969 trees being planted across all suburbs over the winter period, May through to September.

Planting commenced last week and to date 248 trees have already been established in parks, streets and reserves across the City.

The program includes a diverse mix of species, with a strong focus on local native trees that support biodiversity, improve shade and canopy cover, and help create cooler, greener neighbourhoods.

All new planting locations have been carefully assessed and matched with suitable species, taking into consideration verge size, overhead powerlines, nearby infrastructure and park settings.

This year’s program also includes replacement planting for trees removed as part of the South Beach car park upgrade works, ensuring the City maintains its commitment to net canopy replacement in areas impacted by infrastructure projects.

The planting program forms part of the City’s ongoing Urban Forest Plan, which aims to progressively increase tree canopy cover across Fremantle and strengthen long-term climate resilience.
