Improvements are being made to the way parking is managed at Leighton and Port Beaches.

Improvements are being made to the way parking is managed at Leighton and Port Beaches.

Parking will remain free, but the City of Fremantle is introducing four-hour time limits and parking meters to the carparks at the two beaches.

The new signage and parking meters will start being installed this week.

Car park users will now need to either enter their number plate into the new Pay-by-Plate meters or use the popular EasyPark app on their smart device to confirm their parking duration.

The same number plate cannot be re-entered within two hours of the expiry of the initial parking period.

Local residents and businesses have been given prior notice of the changes.

A similar enforcement measure, implemented at South Beach in December last year, has delivered the desired result, with fewer people overstaying the time limit and more equitable access for beachgoers.

That initiative came after consultation with local residents who were concerned that car bays were being used for long periods by illegal campers. A similar issue has been identified at Leighton and Port Beaches.

City of Fremantle CEO Glen Dougall said the new meters will help with enforcement and amenity.

“Introducing free, four-hour metered parking at Leighton and Port Beaches, standardises our parking operations.

“We believe it will resolve the challenges that come with illegal campers, will make beach access more equitable and will improve the general amenity of these popular coastal locations,” Mr Dougall said.
