As communities across Australia mark Homelessness Week 2026, the City of Fremantle is inviting the community to provide feedback on a proposal to establish an overnight respite accommodation service for people experiencing homelessness in Fremantle. The community engagement period opens today, giving residents, businesses and stakeholders the opportunity to learn more about the proposal, ask questions and share their views before further decisions are made. The proposed centre, to be operated by St Patrick’s Community Support Centre (St Pat’s) in a City-owned building at 14 Parry Street, would provide short-term overnight accommodation in a safe and supervised environment, while connecting guests with specialist support services and pathways to longer-term housing. Fremantle Mayor Ben Lawver said community feedback would play an important role in shaping the proposal. “We know the subject of homelessness is of great interest to our community, and we are keen to hear what’s important to them to make this project a success for everyone,” Mayor Lawver said. “This engagement process is an opportunity for the community to review the information, ask questions and provide constructive feedback that will help inform the next stage of the project.” Community members can review the proposal, complete an online survey and find details of upcoming information sessions by visiting the City’s MySay engagement page. The community engagement period closes on Wednesday 16 September 2026. Feedback received during the consultation period will be considered alongside technical assessments and operational planning before Council determines the next steps.
