The meeting was called after the City of Fremantle received a petition asking for works to develop a sports ground at Hilton Park be paused until further discussion could be had about the required tree removal. The attendees at the 3-hour long meeting included tree advocates, sporting club members and park users. Around 40 people spoke to the motion, both for and against. Electors narrowly voted in favour of the original motion: “That Council immediately halt all clearing and mature tree removals across the City of Fremantle, specifically including the destruction of mature trees at Hilton Reserve, and mandate that any future infrastructure, sports, or masterplan developments must be redesigned to prioritise 100% retention of mature urban canopy.” Three additional motions, submitted by electors at the meeting, were voted on. Two were carried and one was lost. They related to the pausing of works associated with the construction of the junior AFL oval, the investigation of alternative options to meet community sporting needs, and community notification and engagement on future proposals involving mature tree removal. Minutes of the Special Electors’ Meeting will be published on the City’s website within the next 10 days. They will be a summary of the meeting, including a record of the voting, and not a verbatim account. All the motions carried at the meeting will be considered by Council at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Wednesday 23 September. The works to redevelop Hilton Park will remain on pause until then. The City acknowledges the community members who attended the meeting and contributed to the discussion.
