First Nations filmmakers, artists, schools, community groups and storytellers are invited to submit short films for FOCUS First Nation Films 2027.

First Nations filmmakers, artists, schools, community groups and storytellers are invited to submit short films for FOCUS First Nation Films 2027, a powerful community program returning to Walyalup/Fremantle on 26 January 2027.

Building on the City of Fremantle’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation, FOCUS First Nation Films will provide an inclusive and respectful alternative to Australia Day, creating space for truth-telling, cultural connection, listening and community reflection.

Bringing together First Nations filmmakers, artists and cultural leaders, the program will showcase stories that explore Australia’s past and present, while celebrating the enduring strength, wisdom, resilience and cultural richness of First Nations peoples and communities. Through film, conversation and shared experiences, FOCUS encourages deeper understanding, meaningful dialogue and stronger connections across the community.

As part of the 2027 program, the City is now calling for short film submissions created by and/or with First Nations filmmakers. Films should share First Nations stories, culture, experiences and perspectives, exploring truths from the past and present while highlighting community, culture and connection.

Submissions are welcome from filmmakers and creators of all ages and experience levels, including primary and secondary school students, young adults, tertiary institutions, film schools, independent artists, community groups and community leaders.

Selected films will be screened during FOCUS First Nation Films’ family-friendly afternoon program, offering audiences of all ages the opportunity to watch, listen, learn, reflect and celebrate First Nations voices and storytelling.
Have a story to share?

Send a brief overview of your project along with a downloadable link to your film file to ffnf@fremantle.wa.gov.au

Submissions close: Friday 13 November 2026, 5pm AWST.
