50m pool remediation works FAQ

Starting in July 2025, the City of Fremantle will undertake some major renovation works on the 50-metre lap pool. The work includes retiling sections of the pool and replacing the ageing filter system with a new, more efficient system.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Find out more below:

While the work is being done, the 50-metre lap pool will be closed.

The covered 25-metre pool, the program pool and the leisure playground pool will remain open. The gym will also remain open.

The pool will be closed from July. We will endeavour to give patrons as much notice as possible of the estimated start date. It is expected that work will be finished by the end of the year.

Some recent discussion suggesting that the pool would be closed for a number of years is incorrect.

The 50-metre pool is 50 years old and needs regular work to ensure it is safe, fit-for-purpose and up to the standards our patrons expect.

To minimise the impact during periods of high usage of the 50-meter pool, the bulk of the work will happen in the cooler months.

Fremantle Leisure Centre staff are currently liaising with other Local Government facilities to offer our members reciprocal entry arrangements to utilise their pools. In principle support has been provided by a couple facilities, with a confirmed list provided closer to the 50-metre pool closure.

The Fremantle Leisure Centre is working with regular swimming groups and squads to find alternative options with other facilities.
