The City of Fremantle has received a petition asking for a Special Electors’ Meeting regarding tree removal by the City to construct a junior oval as part of the Hilton Park redevelopment project. The petition asks for consideration of the following: “That Council immediately halt all clearing and mature tree removals across the City of Fremantle, specifically including the destruction of mature trees at Hilton Reserve, and mandate that any future infrastructure, sports, or masterplan developments must be redesigned to prioritise 100% retention of mature urban canopy.” Under the Local Government Act (section 5.28) electors may call a special meeting at the request of no less than 300 electors, to be held within 35 days. The Special Electors’ Meeting will be held at the Fremantle Town Hall on Tuesday 15 September 2026 at 6.30pm. Under the Act, any resolution passed at the special meeting of electors should be considered by Council at its next ordinary meeting, which will be on Wednesday 23 September 2026. Due to this request, the City will now pause commencement of the works to develop the sports grounds at Hilton Park until these meetings have been held.
