South Beach changeroom opening The South Beach changerooms are now open! The City of Fremantle has been working hard to make South Beach a safe and pleasant experience for the community and appreciate beach-users’ patience. South Beach carpark upgrades (updated 31 July 2025) The next project will see the City upgrading and increasing car parking at South Beach as part of this year’s Infrastructure Improvement Program. With a growing population and longer summers, beach usage has increased and put extra demand on the existing infrastructure. The works will create an additional 58 car bays: 12 in the northern carpark, 44 + 2 ACROD in the southern carpark. While carpark extensions were not specified in the original place plan, they were to be reviewed and subsequently the City has listened to community feedback and decided to increase the capacity of the carparks. This will hopefully reduce the reliance on and degradation of Wilson Park, a recreation reserve, which has been used as overflow parking during peak periods. The City will still promote active transport as the preferred method of getting to the beach but acknowledges that walking or cycling is not possible for everyone. Works have been scheduled to take place from 17 July to 30 October 2025, weather permitting. Works will take place in three sections, the northern carpark, central carpark and southern carpark. Each section will be closed for works during its phase. However, depending on sequencing and progress, sections may reopen in stages within this timeframe. Message boards will be in place to notify road users during closures. Footpath and vehicle access may be restricted in and around the South Beach area, and alternative access will be provided where possible. Parking within the construction area is strictly prohibited during the works and street parking adjacent to the site will also be temporarily closed. The City will plant two new trees for every one removed as part of this project, in line with Council Policy. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we deliver these important upgrades to improve safety, access and functionality at South Beach.
