Date 06 August 2026 Category City news Topic Parks and public open spaces Work to prepare the site for a new junior football oval at Hilton Park will begin later this month as part of Stage One of the Hilton Park redevelopment. Guided by the Hilton Park Precinct Masterplan, adopted by Council in 2024 following community consultation, the redevelopment will deliver upgraded sporting facilities, improved community spaces and new recreation opportunities across Fremantle’s largest sporting and recreation reserve. During site investigations, asbestos-containing material (ACM) was found within earth mounds near the corner of Walton Way and Carrington Street. To safely access and remove the asbestos-containing material, 29 trees within the work area will need to be removed. This includes 11 Peppermint trees and six Norfolk Island Pines. A licensed asbestos contractor will remove the material in accordance with all regulatory requirements. The work area will be securely fenced and signposted, nearby residents have been notified, and appropriate monitoring and clearance processes will be undertaken throughout the removal works. Removing the material is required before construction of the new junior football oval can begin. The site works form part of Stage One of the Hilton Park redevelopment, which also includes the refurbishment of the Brad Hardie Pavilion currently underway. During the works, the basketball court and part of the shared path will be temporarily closed for four to six weeks. The City thanks the community for its patience while these essential works are completed. Residents are advised to avoid the area whilst works are underway. Replacement planting of at least two trees, per tree removed will be carried out as part of the next stage of works, once the site is ready for landscaping. 61 new trees are scheduled to be planted including Marri, Tuart, Coastal Blackbutt and WA Weeping Peppermint. Two bird watering stations will also be installed to help support local wildlife.
