City of Fremantle
Coastal Charm
At the City of Fremantle, we encourage residents to develop and maintain verge gardens to provide a range of social, environmental, and economic benefits to the community. The City provides a number of annual schemes to assist residents to create a successful verge garden including:
The Native Plant Subsidy Scheme returns this year, from Friday 1 May to Saturday 30 May. Residents will be able to purchase subsidised native seedlings grown by local nursery Apace.
This is a fantastic opportunity to choose waterwise native plants that are adapted to thrive in Perth’s environment. Local plant species don’t just look beautiful – they can provide food and shelter for native animals and pollinators and help shade and cool your house and garden.
City of Fremantle residents can purchase up to 20 native plants for $3 each from Apace Nursery, located at 1 Johannah Street, North Fremantle. Apace is open Wednesday to Saturday from 8.30am to 2pm.
This offer is valid once per household. While stocks last. To redeem this offer at Apace, please take proof of your residential address and photo ID.
The 2026 Native Plant Subsidy Scheme is proudly funded by the City of Fremantle and forms part of our ambition to be a leading waterwise city.
Residents can collect free tree mulch from the Fremantle Recycling Centre, subject to availability.

The City mows arterial road verges, bus route verges, and designated hazardous road verges six times a year. While other verges are City property, residents are responsible for their maintenance. Thank you for helping keep our community looking its best!
