The City of Fremantle is providing further information about upcoming works at Hilton Park following community concern about the removal of 26 trees as part of works to deliver a new junior oval. The upcoming works will also include the safe removal of asbestos-containing material (ACM) identified within the work area. The new junior oval forms part of the adopted Hilton Park Precinct Masterplan, which was developed following extensive community consultation. As part of that consultation, the community was asked to consider the “removal of some trees to accommodate other uses on the site such as an additional playing field”. Seventy per cent of respondents supported the concept. Of those respondents, 36.4 per cent wanted the trees replaced with new plantings elsewhere, while 33.3 per cent wanted replacement plantings of mature size elsewhere. Tree removal It is not possible to know the exact number of trees that will need to be removed during the masterplanning process. As detailed planning for Stage One has progressed, the City has worked to minimise the number of trees that need to be removed. A total of 26 trees will be removed as part of the upcoming works, with existing trees retained wherever possible. The City will plant 61 new native trees as part of Stage One – more than double the number being removed. For context, the most recent tree survey at Hilton Park identified 683 trees. Following this work, there will be 718 trees at Hilton Park. Upcoming works Asbestos-containing material has been identified in the ground within the Stage One work area and will be safely removed before construction of the junior oval progresses. The ACM remediation will be undertaken by a licensed asbestos contractor in accordance with regulatory requirements, with appropriate controls, monitoring and clearance processes in place. The Stage One works will deliver the new junior oval and form part of the broader redevelopment of Hilton Park under the adopted Precinct Masterplan.
