Fremantle's Monument Hill a place of quiet reflection

A local law determination to ensure Fremantle’s Monument Hill Reserve remains a place of remembrance and quiet solitude will come into effect tomorrow.

Last week Fremantle Council resolved to adopt a determination that prohibits flying motorised model airplanes, helicopters, drones or other similar remotely piloted devices on or over Monument Hill Reserve without a permit from the City of Fremantle.

The determination also prohibits riding a bicycle, a skateboard, rollerblades, a sandboard or a similar device on any of the monuments or their surrounding bases.

Fremantle Deputy Mayor Andrew Sullivan said it was important for the sanctity of Monument Hill to be respected.

“Monument Hill is not only the site for two of our most importance civic events in Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, it also provides spectacular views out over Fremantle and the Indian Ocean,” Deputy Mayor Sullivan said.

“It’s a great place to bring a picnic, relax on the lawns and watch the sunset over the ocean, and we encourage people to do that.

“But we also remind people that it is a memorial to all the servicemen and women who have fought and died for our country and it should be treated with the respect it deserves.”

The City of Fremantle Local Government Property Local Law 2002 allows the City to make a determination prohibiting specified activities on local government property.

The penalty for failing to comply with a determination is a $125 fine.
